Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero, known professionally as Chita Rivera, was born on January 23, 1933, in Washington, D.C. From a young age, she exhibited a passion for dance, which led her to enroll in the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet. There, her talent caught the eye of George Balanchine’s School of American Ballet, propelling her to New York City and setting the stage for her extraordinary career.

Rivera’s breakthrough came in 1957 when she originated the role of Anita in the Broadway production of “West Side Story.” This role not only showcased her exceptional dancing abilities but also marked the beginning of her ascent to stardom. Over the years, Rivera continued to captivate audiences with her performances in iconic musicals such as “Chicago,” “The Rink,” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”

Throughout her career, Rivera shattered barriers and broke new ground as a Latina artist. She was the first Latina to receive a Kennedy Center Honor in 2002. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, highlighting her immense impact on American culture and the arts.
